Management Style and Leadership Philosophy
I believe that there are three elements to successful leadership in any business, and that no one element is more or less important than the other.
In order for a leader to be successful, and for the business to thrive, equal emphasis must be placed on each part of this Golden Triangle. If you take care of the people who work with you, they will take care of the people we serve in our hospitality businesses and in their personal lives. We have to take care of the product; the buildings, grounds equipment and everything that makes up our world and then we can increase sales. If we also control our expenses, then we will grow our profits. It is that simple.
Business is all about the people, and no more so than in our business of hospitality. And when I talk about people, I am really meaning relationships. I believe that we have to build relationships through trust and respect between our staff. I have always said that we should treat our staff and each other as we would treat our paying guests. This is a first and immovable principle. The relationships then build between staff and guests, again built on trust and respect. Ultimately we want our guests to interact and build relationships with each other, to spread the word about our brands, return often and recommend us to their friends and colleagues. We need to show respect for our owners, our surroundings and our equipment.
As leaders, we have to live and breathe the ethos of trust and respect. We encourage, inspire and engage from the heart with staff and guests. We keep our promises and we encourage innovation. We never belittle or stifle ideas. If we are not moving forward, we are moving backwards. There is no such thing as standing still.
In these difficult economic times, we need to embody these principles all the more.
I am a transformational leader. I manage from the front, collaboratively, fairly but with resolve. I have a vision and communicate that vision. I inspire everyone to be their best with positive reinforcement and encouragement. When things go wrong, we learn from the mistakes but don't blame. I live by the principles of the Golden Triangle and use tools such as Emotional Intelligence and communication skills to reach the goals and exceed them.
I engage the power of Emotional Intelligence to make positive change in myself and others. I know myself, I recognize that I have choices and I give of myself. I have a reputation as an inspirational leader and will bring that leadership style to any organization that I have the privilege to work for.
